Participation and Interaction

SOTA 2007 will be highly participatory, and we fully expect that productive interactions among participants will lead to clarification of our knowledge of the ‘State of the Arc’ (including prioritizing what we need to test and what we need to resolve in order to minimize the most troubling uncertainties). Our assessments and conclusions will be communicated to the larger community via the publication of Team Reports.

Each participant will be assigned by the Program Committee to a ‘Team’ of 5-6 scientists (Team Leaders will also be identified). In order to assist us in the process of defining the Teams, participants are asked to express an order of preference for three of the 16 Questions when they register. Teams will be responsible for formulating a well-crafted 600-word response to one of the Questions identified by the Program Committee (perhaps modified in response to the abstracts). Drafts of these documents will be discussed on Friday afternoon/evening, and the revised reports will be the published record of the meeting’s preoccupations and accomplishments. We hope that each Team will find the time for electronic and/or oral dialogs on their topic prior to arriving at the meeting.

Morning sessions will run from 8:30 - 13:00.
The meeting schedule on Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday afternoons will be organized so that there will be no formal sessions before 16:00. This will allow Teams to take lunch together and to then continue their deliberations into the early afternoon. We will follow a Latin American dining schedule in that the evening meal will begin around 21:30.

There will be coffee and snacks served from 15:45 - 16:30, during which participants are urged to view and discuss posters.
